Notes from an acupuncturist - May 2025

☯️ Lately I couldn’t help but noticing how many of you (in the clinic, but also outside of it) are talking about all things fertility. Whether it’s menopause, trying to conceive with IVF, period-pain, gender-transitioning, egg freezing or sexual health. It’s a delicate topic. And the journey can involve a lot of complexities.

The role of the Kidneys, Liver and Spleen

TCM approach of fertility is holistic—focusing on a deeper **balance **that involves vitality, environment and an individual’s need. In classical TCM texts fertility was often framed in binary terms. But in my clinic and some other modern practitioners these principles have been adapted to be more inclusive and applicable to trans and non-binary people as well.

I strongly believe fertility is not only reduced to someones physical anatomy and health. It’s more than that. They key organs that are involved are:

Kidneys: These are the foundational organs that are responsible for the Jing (Essence). This is the root source of reproduction, growth and vitality.

**Liver: **Responsible for the Qi and Blood (and hormonal) flow. But also emotional hormony since the Liver is connected to stress and anger.

Spleen: Produces the necessary Qi and Blood to nourish the body and reproductive system for conception.

These three organ systems work interdependently, and their balance is essential for optimal fertility in TCM. When one or more of these systems are imbalanced, it can contribute to fertility challenges.

TCM tips

A little tip for this month. Even though the weather feels warm and some of you are tempted to seek cooling. You may want to avoid the use and intake of ice cubes, cold drinks, crop tops and ice cream. If you are working on improving anything in the field of fertility, it is important to limit these.

We want you to keep your middle and lower jiao warm. A well-warmed body provides the building blocks for healthy fertility.
