🌼 🌱 One moment, the sun is out and we rush out to get together with friends, family and see the sun and the next, the weather is grey and we want to stay inside, but we have to go out to work. As much as the weather of this season is full of beautiful contradictions, so I think is our energy level with ups and downs.
Why am I so tired - a TCM perspective
Really the last couple of weeks the most heard complaint was tiredness and low energy. Some people mentioned to feel very energetic during the day, but dead tired every evening, not able to do anything after dinner. Others were just tired the whole day. In these patient examples no one was on anti histamines, or pregnant, because that would be a different story.
There are a few reasons ‘Spring tiredness’ is a thing. In spring, the Liver works overtime to fuel the body with Qi and blood after winter’s stagnation. Like the tree and plants who have been resting in Wintertime, they are now using all energy for growing new branches and flowers. If the liver hasn’t been optimal and there’s a Qi deficiency or stagnation, you may feel exhausted and restless. You can also feel irritable, have tight shoulders and headaches as well.
Another explanation for Spring tiredness is wind. Wind in TCM is one of the Six evil pathogens. It’s another level of defining wind. Because this TCM Wind can invade the body causing allergies, blocked sinuses, sneezing, itchy eyes. And as your body fights this pathogen with Lung Qi, it can make you tired.
TCM Tips
For maintaining our energy the quickest way is to get acupuncture. With stimulating specific acu points in the meridians it improves the circulation and makes you feel well rested afterwards. A perfect quick solution for the tired humans in need of some energy. And it may also help with reducing inflammation pathways and inhibiting the release of histamines - to prevent allergies.
A few tips to help you stay healthy this month:
**Move your body: **Go for a walk, leave your bike or car at home. And slow down your movement. Stretching is also good to do.
**Eat your greens: **It’s the season of andijvie and asparagus. Add more of these and other green vegetables to your meals.
Protect from evil Wind: TCM says wind enters through the neck and other body parts that are not covered. Make sure to always wear a scarf. Also drink enough warm water, wash your hands as often like you did during COVID times, and rinse your nose.
But most of all. Be like the nature. Just as nature slowly awakes from the winter, our bodies also need a slow period of adjustment. If we push ourselves too hard too quickly, we deplete our energy reserves.
